The Birth Altar To create a birth altar, have each guest can bring a special item dedicated to the baby. Special items such as unique stones, necklaces, charms, notes to mom and baby, candles, and the like are ideal items that can later be set up in the mothers home to create sacred space and remind her of her support system. Wool Yarn Bracelets Have everyone sit in a circle on the floor. Pass the roll of wool yarn around the circle. As each person receives the yarn, have them share words of wisdom and blessings for the new mother and her baby. When each woman is done speaking, have them tie a piece of yarn around their wrist. Everyone woman will wear the piece of yarn until the mother goes into labor. Once they hear that her labor has begun, each woman may cut the yarn off to symbolize the new mother’s transition into motherhood. Generational Names Ritual As each woman takes their turn speaking have them begin by first saying their name, then the name of their own mother, then the name of their mothers mother (their grandmother), and lastly the name of their mothers, mothers, mother(great grandmother)—all the way back for as many generations as they can remember. This is a neat way to connect each woman with her past and all the women from whom she descended. The following is an example of how this would work: Woman 1: “My name is Clara, daughter of Elanor (Clara’s mother), daughter of Audrey (Clara’s grandmothers name), Daughter of Sharon (Clara’s great grandmothers name.) On each note card attach a unique bead. After each guest has written a message to the baby on the note card, have all the guests sit in a circle. The host will then read each note aloud to the new mother. After reading each note the host will place each bead on a piece of string and begin to make a necklace for the new mother.
